You would be assuming that there would be enough people willing to come out on week nights, and enough decent bands to have a continual line-up running 7 days.

There are plenty of people willing to go out on weeknights for a few beers. Take Zorros for example. People would just go for beers because you'd always run into people you knew there, and the music was good. Gigs weren't the only reason to go to the pub...

I agree that the social aspect of going to the pub is a huge puller for crowds. Personally though, I think gigs maybe 3-4 days a week, regular ones, catering to different genre's, to try and pull a different crowd and regulars. A metal night, a core night with all the bands the real metalheads disdain, then you have the alternate night with a mixed line-up and shit. The rest of the time it would operate like a normal pub, and just be a social gathering with cheap drinks. But those nights obviously wouldn't be packed as their would be nothing to pull others there.

Nah, I'm just old enough to remember when Canberra was ok and not full of scene queers and shit bands playing to a crowd of 10 of their mates...

So who do you propose would fill out the club 7 nights a week then? If all we have are scene queers then how would a venue in the city be any better than one in Belconnen or Tuggernong?

it would never friggin work, no way such a business venture could rely solely on broke ass "metalheads" filling their doors on a daily basis... if someone was really keen on doing something like this i think it would have to be a 1 night a week/fortnight/month thing

I don't know, i think you could get away with 2 nights a week if 1 of the nights wasn't based solely around metal.
Alternatively you could go the opposite and rely on everyone bar metalheads. Have a pop night with indie pop groups, have electro nights or what have you. (Admittedly i'm sure there are already a few around, I don't know of them, but i'm sure they exist).

Nah, I'm just old enough to remember when Canberra was ok and not full of scene queers and shit bands playing to a crowd of 10 of their mates... Sounds like my parents... "In my day we used to walk 10km in the snow to get to Zorro's..." Which gigs are you referring to? 10 people? To my knowledge, most metal gigs this year have pulled between 60 - 80 people, easy. Not bad for locals. Bigger gigs pull 100 - 200 + And that's without the inflation of numbers that happens so often in Canberra Note: Crowd pulled = number of physical persons through the door who paid... Not number of people in the building and surrounding areas who may or may not have had anything to do with the gig...

Most recently with the Rock Ape. Pretty packed every weekend, and a fair few on weeknights. Which gigs are you referring to? 10 people? To my knowledge, most metal gigs this year have pulled between 60 - 80 people, easy. Not bad for locals. Bigger gigs pull 100 - 200 + Yea, that would explain the rad turnout for Denial of God, and fantastic turnout for Vomitor and Shackles.... Apparently weak shit pulls the crowds these days.

Umm, same Rockape where Switchblade played to a handful of people. Bloodduster too come to think of it.... It was generally so dead through the week that it was only open 'coz it was legally required. Nostalgia seems to inflate crowd numbers/band skill/coolness of attendees/amazingness of atmosphere. I clearly remember seeing some pretty crap bands at Rockape. Terrace, Terminus, Jaggers, Asylum, Gypsy and ANU too actually. Some gigs are crap, most are pretty good/enjoyable, some are excellent, doesn't matter where or what era. After almost 20 years of gig-going in Canberra I would agree crowd numbers are down on "the good ol' days". I would blame internet/pay TV/X-Box/expensive drinks/high cost of living more than lack of good bands or venues. Has worked just fine in the past. Most recently with the Rock Ape. Pretty packed every weekend, and a fair few on weeknights.

The Basement has metal or one of it's offspring most fridays and saturdays. I don't know, i think you could get away with 2 nights a week if 1 of the nights wasn't based solely around metal.

What Kurt said.. And (most of the time) fuck all promotion = fuck all punters. Maybe you guys drive the crowds away from those gigs with your complaining...
