Anyone catch the show on tv last night about the 'straight edge movement' in America?
I lol'd for the entire show...
Basically, some kids have decided they don't want to drink, take drugs or smoke, so they 'become' straight edge. Problem is, some kids are taking it too far and they have started to get militant and fanatical about it. They get around in gangs of 5 or more and harrass / beat up / rob and in one case, murder drug takers, dealers or who ever is not part of their straight edge gang. Now straight edge 'gangs' are on the terrorist watch list and in police gang files.
I think the whole thing is beyond silly.
Attention kids (or anyone for that matter), if you don't want to drink / smoke / take drugs, THEN DON'T!! It really is that simple. There is no need for a movement or gang.
You go out, someone offers you a drink / a smoke / a pill, you say "no thank you". End of story.
I don't understand why this has come about. When I was a teen, I had friends who smoked, friends who didn't.. Friends who drank, friends who didn't.. etc.. What's the fucking problem?
Is this straight edge thing happening here?

Straight edge kids are only straight edge until no one's looking. Having said that, I think it's a reaction to the rock n' roll lifestyle of some of the legends; if Hendrix, Moon, Bonham and Lynott had been straight edge, they'd still be with us. Yes, it's daft...but Australia also has rival gangs of metalheads that attack each other because you prefer Pantera over Judas Priest....Priest are obviously the better band!

Ha... twits.
"Straight Edge" is just another trend, it will pass with time. Just like fluoro lycra and big, poofy fringes.
