I moved here from Tassie over a year ago, and there have been NO decent underage gigs. What is going on? Yeah sure those poseur kids that are annoying and retarded and show up to gigs sometimes ruin it, but what about us younger metal warriors who actually have a passion for the music? This is ridiculous. I live for metal. In Hobart we'd have an underage Psycroptic gig like once a month.  Not happy, Canberra. |

If you can get together a decent number of underage kids who will attend a metal gig, I'd happily organise one and plenty of bands would be happy to play. The problem is that people have tried to put them on and the kids just don't go....
I'd love to see some underage metal gigs happening in Canberra. Want to help me get it started?

I'm keen to help if anyone wants it. The problem is Psycroptic draws alot of kids so they CAN have an underage gigs, but our big bands AoH, KFS, Infinitum, don't really pull the younger crowd.

Hell yeah.
I'm positive I can rally up the kiddy troops.
It is a shame there isn't that much of a following among the underages here, but in a way it's good.
There are only so many times you can see a poseur, idiotic 15 year old in the same Pantera, Iron Maiden or Slayer shirt before you wanna punch thier head in.

Before you go on and on about these 'poseur' kids. Chances are if they are wearing an Iron Maiden shirt, then they actually LISTEN to and LIKE Iron Maiden.
Metalheads get hated on enough, and if you want more underage concerts, you need to NOT create an elitist atmoshphere. So they like maiden but not your 'true brutal metal', get over it, they still like metal, so how about we stop all the stupid petty in-fighting hate bullcrap.
Just a thought.

When I say poseur kids I actually mean the ones that wear the tee shirt, then when you make a comment on it they don't know what you're talking about.
And "true brutal metal"? Man, don't give me that, I listen to fucking Sonata Arctica hahaha. Call them brutal and I'll laugh at you.
I hate elitist metal heads and ignorance.
I just also hate those kids who ARE actual poseurs, not kids in band shirts in general.

I know what you are saying though. When I was 15-16 I was the WORST black/heavy metal elitist. It didn't help that I was the only person in my 1000 strong christian school that listened to anything heavier than Cradle.
I'm more concerned really about why you think kids pose? They generally don't. I wear a hell of lot of different band shirts, but if someone came up to me and started talking about how awesome some guitarist was on that really awesome demo they did, then it's sort of like, well what the fuck?
And elitist metalheads hate everyone who doesn't prescribe to their particular band(s) that they tout as lords and saviours of a 'dying and unoriginal' genre.

Also what decent and I stress the word decent here, venues are there FOR underrage shows? I think the best way to get underrage shows, is to do a sort of 'festival'. Throw on 8 or so bands 4 or so locals, 2 fairly well knowns, and then 2 bands gauranteed to draw the younger crowd.
Just my poorly formed, and slightly retarded thoughts.

All ages venues are really hard to come by, some venues can organise to do all ages shows but will charge a lot for security to ensure under 18 people don't drink.
I know there is:
-The woden youth centre
-Holy grail can organise all ages shows, they will close the bar down stairs and open the one upstairs if you want.
-There was talk of the basement doing an all ages show but i dont know how that would work
That is all i can think of at the moment

Couldn't the basement charge say an $5 for profit and armbands? 1 colour for underage and another for 18+?
The arena uses a certain sort of sticky one that won't come off less cut, so if there are any tampered bands, you don't let the kids with them on, in?
Just a thought, probably not greatly practical, but it's a simple-ish solution.

but how do you separate the under 18 people from the bar?
the greater issue for venues is not under 18's buying from the bar but people buying drinks for them.

haha yeah, I had tried looking at moving my festival to all ages a few years ago. The best option I was able to come up with was the Holy grail, i think the deal was that a certain percentage of the ticket cost had to go to the venue to cover security and insurance, (or was that when i tried doing that at the ground floor....) anyway i'm sure it has changed now.
The logistics for all the venues in Canberra is hard. Shame we don't have somewhere like the RSL in Blacktown where they have the stage in a separate room to the standard bar.
But that is an idea, i wonder if anyone has looked into having a gig at one of the various clubs around town, (Labour, Southern cross)

and ashahalasin I know what you mean about the black metal elitists hah i used to be one, fuck i look back and realise how stupid i was. I still enjoy that music but at least i listen to a wider range of stuff now, i mean hell my band at the moment takes alot of influence from post-rock haha.
But unfortunately shit sticks and I still feel like I have an unfavourable reputation from those days. Part the reason why i stopped organising shows, i was getting too much grief from the people who inevitably turned up to the show anyway haha
